Dictator-president of Uganda. Full name Idi Amin Dada Oumee, aka 'Big Daddy'.amin (1924) seizes power in a military coup in January 1971. He initiates mass executions of troops he believes to be loyal to his rival, now-former president Obote. He becomes field marshal in 1975 and life president in 1976. He expels the country's 50,000 Indians and Pakistanis in 1972, challenges
britain and the
United States, breaks relations with Israel and supports Libya and the Palestinians, becoming personally involved when Palestinians hijack a plane and order it fly to Uganda.
Domestically Amin launches a campaign of persecution against rival tribes, murdering between 100,000 and 500,000. In an attempt to divert attention from Uganda's internal problems, he launches an attack on Tanzania in 1978. The war is quickly lost by the demoralized Ugandese army, and when Tanzania counter-invades Amin flees to Saudi Arabia.
In 1989 an attempt to return to Uganda fails and amin leads a comfortable life in saudi arabia until he dies on august 16th, 2003.
